San Francisco, CA, United States (4E Sports) – The San Francisco 49ers will not pick up their fifth-year option for top pass rusher Aldon Smith after several run-ins with the law recently.
Sources said the 49ers are “not expected” to pick up an option on Smith before the May 3 deadline set by the league for picking up fifth-year options for players taken in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Recently, Smith was arrested at the Los Angeles Airport, where he was charged with a false report of a bomb threat. He was also arrested twice for DUI and three felony gun charges.
Smith is one of the key players for the 49ers, tallying 42 sacks in three seasons wherein he played just 43 games.
Sources added that the 49ers do not plan to cut Smith, who has $3 million in guaranteed salary next season.
Smith may be suspended at the start of the season but the length of the ban is yet to be known.
