Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Tyler Zeller had 22 points and 11 rebounds while Dion Waiters scored 19 as the Cleveland Cavaliers blasted the New Jersey Nets, 114-85 Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena.
All-Star Kyrie Irving scored 15 in the win.
The Cavs outscored the Nets 22-8 in the second part of the first quarter to take 33-21 lead heading to the second period.
Jorge Gutierrez hit two 3-pointers as the Nets opened the second quarter with a 15-4 advantage to cut their deficit to 37-36.
The Cavs managed to hang on to a 51-49 lead at halftime.
Then Spencer Hawes hit a 3-pointer that triggered a 15-4 blast by the Cavs to start the third and take a 66-53 lead.
Irving had eight straight points for the Cavs midway in the third as they kept the Nets at bay to lead by 74-59.
The Cavs finished the quarter with a 6-0 run to bring a 81-64 lead in the fourth.
It was back-and-forth early in the last quarter before Carrick Felix had a 3-pointer that sparked a 12-4 Cavs burst as they took a 99-74 lead.
An Alonzo Gee dunk with 2:50 left gave the Cavs a 29-point lead that they kept until the buzzer.
The Cavs, who finished a disappointing 33-49 in coach Mike Brown’s first season back and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year.
Marcus Thornton and Andray Blatche scored 20 apiece for the Nets who wound up with the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs.
Coach Jason Kidd elected to rest Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Joe Johnson, Deron Williams and Shaun Livingston in the loss.
