Solvang, CA, United States (4E) – A thousand homes and businesses in Solvang, Santa Barbara County, California were evacuated Wednesday after an unexploded military ordnance was found in the city’s downtown.

Bomb disposal units from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s office and the Vandenberg Air Force Base set up a perimeter of 1,500 feet around the device found along the 1600 block of Copenhagen Drive at First Street just before 3:30 p.m.

The device was removed and defused after midnight, the sheriff’s office said. Residents were later allowed to return to their homes.

Upon discovery of the ordnance, reverse 911 calls were made to tell residents and hotel occupants to evacuate the area. Authorities also went door-to-door to tell people to leave the area. The evacuees temporarily stayed at a Red Cross shelter put up at the Veterans Memorial Building at 1745 Mission Drive.
