WESTOVER – The Curwensville Area High School softball team evened its season record on Thursday with an 11-1  win at Harmony.  The Golden Tide now stand at 2-2 on the year with a 1-1 mark in the Moshannon Valley League.

The Lady Tide wasted no time in taking the lead with all the runs they would need in the first inning.  Senior Abby Dugo opened the game by reaching safely on a Lady Owl error.  Tierra Shope pushed her to second with a sacrifice bunt and Dugo scampered home on Alaina Stiles’ single for the 1-0 start.  After the seniors set the table, the juniors followed to clean things up.  Stiles had stolen second before Nikki Harker drew a walk.  Megan McCartney then singled to push Stiles home to get credit for the game winning RBI and a 2-0 start.

McCartney’s hit was the game winner because Harmony plated its only run in the first inning as well.  The hosts were able to produce their run without a hit as Tarra Hauser drew a lead-off walk and a Stephanie Maseto bunt attempt left both runners safe on a play at second.  A ground out from Breanne Stiver advanced the runners to second and third with a wild pitch allowing Hauser to score moments later.  Maseto tried to score on the same play as the toss back to the pitcher got away.  However, Stiles backed the play at short and cut down her counterpart at the plate to keep the score at 2-1 after one inning.

After the first inning action, the Lady Tide took control of the game with Shope silencing the Owl bats and the offense capitalizing on every hit, and the miscues by the hosts.

“We were more focused right from the start in this game,” said Tide head coach Allen Leigey.  “It started from the time we got off the bus to the last out which came off of a double play.  Hopefully, we can keep this momentum building into next week.”

Shope allowed just two hits in the game while striking out 10 Lady Owls.  She walked two batters and hit another, but otherwise controlled the circle for the Tide.

Stiles paced the offense with three hits including a triple while scoring twice and driving in three runs on the afternoon.  Dugo scored three times for the visitors who slapped out eight hits from five batters.

Hauser had control problems on the mound and didn’t get much help from her defense, which allowed Curwensville to score most of its runs.  Hauser walked eight and struck out three giving up just three earned runs.  The Lady Owls committed nine errors to aid the Lady Tide.

Curwensville posted three runs in the second inning when Stiles and Dugo singled around a walk and two errors for a 5-1 advantage.  Stiles’ triple was the only hit in a three-run fifth inning that also featured two walks and another miscue.  Melanie Milliron singled in the sixth inning to help two runs score and the Tide finished the scoring in the seventh with one run on no hits for the 11-1 final.

Curwensville will hope to keep the on the winning track on Monday when they stay in the MVL by traveling to Moshannon Valley.  The game is slated to start at 4:30.
