Baltimore, MD, United States (4E Sports) – Miguel Gonzales tossed five scoreless innings while Adam Jones had two hits to carry the Baltimore Orioles to a 3-0 blanking of the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday at Camden Yards.
Gonzalez (1-1) gave up three hits, walked three and struck out six in picking up his first win of the season as the Orioles won both games of the rain-shortened series.
Tuesday’s game was postponed due to bad weather. No make-up date has been announced for the rain out.
Nick Markakis also had two hits and Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy added an RBI apiece as the Orioles (7-7) won their fifth in seven games.
Zack Britton worked three innings of relief while Tommy Hunter pitched a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.
Jake Odorizzi (1-2) suffered the loss, yielding three runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts in five innings of work as the Rays (7-8) lost their third straight game.
The Orioles broke a scoreless tie with a two-run fourth inning. Nelson Cruz scored the inning’s first run on Wieters’ bases-loaded sacrifice fly before Chris Davis scored on Hardy’s ground out to make it a 2-0 game.
Baltimore got another run in the fifth when Jones’ swinging bunt stayed fair down the third base line, allowing Ryan Flaherty to score for a 3-0 edge.
The Rays loaded the bases in the seventh but Ben Zobrist grounded into a fielder’s choice that forced out the runner coming home. Will Myers struck out to end the Rays’ scoring chance.
