New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Brendan Shanahan will immediately begin his new role as Toronto Maple Leafs president.
He is leaving his job as chief of NHL Department of Player Safety, which he assumed in 2011, to accept his the job.
Shanahan has never worked in an NHL team front office.
The 45-year-old Shanahan was an eight-time All-Star, three-time Stanley Cup champion and a Hockey Hall of Fame inductee.
The Leafs were eliminated from postseason contention earlier this week, missing the playoffs for the eighth time in the past nine seasons.
