Victor Hanescu stuns top seed Kevin Anderson in Morocco

Casablanca, Morocco (4E Sports) – World No. 89 Victor Hanescu stunned top seed and last year’s runner-up Kevin Anderson, 6-4, 6-4, Wednesday in the second round of the Grand Prix Hassan II.

The Romanian, a finalist in Casablanca in 2010, saved the five break points he faced to prevail over Anderson in 86 minutes.

Hanescu will next face sixth seed Federico Delbonis, who reached his second ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season with a 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory over Canadian qualifier Filip Peliwo.

Anderson wasn’t the only seed to tumble. Kazakhstan’s Aleksandr Nedovyesov ousted seventh seed Robin Haase, 7-6(6), 6-4, in the first round to claim his first tour-level win at the age of 27.

Eighth seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez exchanged eight breaks of serve with Mikhail Kukushkin before prevailing, 7-6(5), 7-6(6).

Two of the ATP’s rising stars won their openers. Pablo Carreno Busta, who was named 2013 Most Improved Player of the Year, dismissed Tobias Kamke. 6-1, 6-2, while Jiri Vesely defeated Leonardo Mayer, 6-4, 6-3.

At the US Men’s Clay Court Championship, No. 6 Juan Monaco defeated Somdev Devvarman, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, while Santiago Giraldo ousted Matthew Ebden, 6-1, 6-2.

On the women’s side, top seed and defending champion Jelena Jankovic defeated Mathilde Johansson, 7-5, 7-5, to advance to the second round of the Claro Open.

Jankovic’s second-round opponent Thursday will be Georgian qualifier Sofia Shapatava.

American Vania King secured a berth in the quarterfinals after beating wild card Maria Irigoyen, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0.

Also advancing to the second round were two-time Bogota champion Lourdes Dominguez Lino and Chanelle Scheepers, who defeated Yuliana Lizarazo and Alexandra Panova, respectively.

In Poland, No. 5 Klara Koukalova became the third player to reach 20 WTA-level match wins this year after beating Annika Beck, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the second round of the Katowice Open.

With the victory, Koukalova joined Li Na and Dominika Cibulkova in the elite club. Agnieszka Radwanska will try to reach 20 herself on Thursday.
