Toyota recalls 6.39 million cars over engine starter, seat rail defects

Tokyo, Japan (4E) – Toyota Motor Corp. announced Wednesday the recall of 6.39 million cars, including 1.8 million units in the U.S.

The recalled cars belong to 27 models, including the Corolla, Yaris, Matrix compact cars and RAV4 and Highlander sport-utility vehicles. Toyota will fix their engine-starter defects that led two vehicles in Japan to catch fire. 1.67 million 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2008-2010 Highlander, 2009-2010 Tacoma, 2006-2008 RAV4 and 2006-2010 Yaris vehicles. Of those, 1.3 million are in the U.S.

Toyota will also fix the recalled cars’ spiral-cable assembly that could be damaged by the steering wheel and disable the air bags. The defect affects 3.5 million vehicles.

Seat adjusters that could fail to lock, allow the seat to move in a crash: 670,000 2006-2010 Yaris Hatchback, 2007-2010 Yaris sedan, 2008-2010 Scion xD vehicles. Of the total, 472,500 are U.S.-market vehicles.
