Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Dancing With The Stars alum Samantha Harris has been diagnosed with breast cancer and revealed Wednesday that she is set to undergo a double mastectomy.

Talking to Entertainment Tonight’s Brooke Anderson, Harris said she had mixed emotions when she was diagnosed with the big C.

She said, “The realization sort of overtook me, my eyes started to well up from tears when I was trying to keep myself calm because I thought the most important thing … was that I needed to focus and listen to what they were saying … and make sure I heard the words that they were telling me because there is a lot of information.”

“I went back for the results of the pathology and I was by myself because there was nothing to worry about or so I thought,” she continued. “It’s not like in the movies where they sit you down across a table in their office and say, ‘Well, you have cancer.’ It was these wonderful surgeons [who] started drawing diagrams and talking as I was on the exam table listening to what they were saying, it dawned on me without them coming right out to say it.”

The 40-year-old mother of two learned about her diagnosis months after feeling a lump in her right breast last fall. After seeking opinions of three different specialists, she decided to undergo double mastectomy over a second lumpectomy with radiation, which she said made her “feel so much calmer.”

“I was sick of feeling the way that I did in the days after the diagnosis,” she said. “I knew I needed to take control.”

Meanwhile, after the reveal, Harris tweeted, “Thks for the well wishes, kindness & support. It means so much to me & my family! It’s a tough road but I’m here to stand up & fight cancer.”

Harris, who married Michael Hess in2005, has two daughters, Josselyn Sydney, 6, and Hillary Madison, 3.
