Nashville, TN, United States (NewsBahn) – Breanna Stewart scored 21 points and Stefanie Dolson chipped in 17 points and 16 rebounds as UConn topped Notre Dame 79-58 Tuesday night in the women’s national basketball title game.
UConn capped its fifth unbeaten season at 40-0, while the Irish took their first loss and fell to 37-1.
Notre Dame was within 45-38 at the break but scored just 20 points in the second half to fail in their minor upset bid.
Notre Dame hit just 35.5 percent of its shots, while UConn hit nearly 47 percent of its attempts from the field.
The Irish were seeking their first title since 2001, but dropped their third title game in four years.
The Huskies have a record nine national championships and came on the heels of UConn men’s title win over Kentucky Monday night.
