Toronto, ON, Canada (4E Sports) – Masahiro Tanaka struck out eight and Jacoby Ellsbury had three hits as the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 7-3 Friday at Rogers Centre.
Tanaka (1-0) allowed three runs, two earned, and six hits, walked none and struck out eight in seven innings. He threw 97 pitches and had 65 strikes.
Carlos Beltran and Mark Texeira had RBIs against Blue Jays starter Dustin McGowan for a 2-0 Yankees lead.
Tanaka surrendered a home run to Toronto’s Melky Cabrera on his third pitch but settled down to retire Colby Rasmus, Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion.
Jonathan Diaz then had an RBI double in the second to give the Jays 3-2 advantage.
But Yangervis Solarte doubled in the third as the Yankees reclaimed the lead at 4-3.
Brian McCann made it 5-3 for the Yankees in the fourth following an RBI that allowed Jacoby Ellsbury to score again.
Run-scoring hits by Gardner in the eighth and Solarte in the ninth made it a four-point lead for the Yankees.
McGowan (0-1) allowed four runs and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
