Charleston, SC, United States (4E Sports) – Sixth seed Eugenie Bouchard defeated No. 11 Venus Williams, 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 6-4, Thursday to book a spot in the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Cup.
Bouchard, a semifinalist at the Australian Open, ousted the world No. 1 Williams, in two hours and 14 minutes at Family Circle Tennis Center.
The 20-year-old Bouchard broke her 33-year-old counterpart to end the match, sending Williams to the sideline together with her sister, No. 1 Serena Williams. Venus captured a title here 10 years ago.
Meanwhile, third seed Sara Errani also advanced after beating Peng Shuai, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5).
In other matches, 12th seed Daniela Hantuchova defeated Teliana Pereira, 6-2, 6-3, while Jana Cepelova ousted 13th seed Russian Elena Vesnina, 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-3. Hantuchova will battle Cepelova Friday.
The 78th-ranked Cepelova shocked defending champion Serena Williams in the second round on Tuesday. She was just 4-7 on tour this year prior to this week.
