Soda Springs, CA, United States (NewsBahn) – San Francisco snowboarder Abe Finkelstein, who disappeared Monday in a snow storm near Boreal ski resort in the Sierra Nevada, engineered his own rescue by creating a shelter of tree branches then navigating his way through snowy mountains to safety.
He made his way to a Soda Springs home and was met by search crews Tuesday evening after suffering just minor frostbite. Finkelstein was later checked out at a hospital but had just a brief stay.
“He was able to successfully self-rescue,” Capt. Jeff Pettitt said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. “I don’t recommend that for everybody.”
Finkelstein, an experienced outdoorsman, was out with his father but opted to make one more run on his own when he disappeared.
