Raptors hold off late rally to halt Magic

Orlando, FL, United States (4E Sports) – DeMar DeRozan had 28 points, Jonas Valanciunas added 20 points and nine rebounds to lead the Toronto Raptors past the Orlando Magic, 98-93 Sunday at Amway Center.

Kyle Lowry added 16 points.

The Raptors (42-31) closed the first period with a 9-2 spurt to take a 27-22 lead.

A 17-4 run in the second gave the Raptors an a 46-28 advantage.

The Raptors pushed their lead to 49-30 at 4:13 of the second and led 57-38 at the half.

Free throws by DeRozan to start the third gave the Raptors a 21-point lead.

Maurice Harkless hit a 3-pointer at 8:52 of the third to trigger a 12-3 Magic run capped by a Jameer Nelson 3-point jumper to cut the lead to 64-54.

Victor Oladipo and Tobias Harris started the fourth with 3-point jumpers in a 9-3 burst as the Magic (21-53) cut their deficit to 76-73 with 9:53 to play in the game.

After Oladipo tied it at 78 with a layup, the Raptors were able to push their lead back to 96-98 after a 3-pointer by DeRozan.

Oladipo had a basket and Arron Afflalo took advantage of a Raptors turnover by draining a 3-pointer to cut it to 96-93.

Lowry’s layup rolled off the side of the rim but the Magic failed to inbound taht led to a 5-second violation. DeRozan then hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Nik Vucevic led the Magic with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Jameer Nelson and Victor Oladipo each added 16 points.
