Alyssa Thomas helps Maryland oust No. 1 Tennessee

Louisville, KY, United States (4E Sports) – Alyssa Thomas recorded a double-double with 33 points and 13 rebounds to help No. 4 Maryland dismiss No. 1 Tennessee via a 73-62 win in Sunday’s Sweet 16 at KFC Yum! Center.

The double-double was the 27th for Thomas, who is tied for second-most in Division I, as Maryland won its third game in a row, its seventh in eight games and for the 11th time in 13 games.

Lexie Brown added 14 points, Laurin Mincy chipped in 11 points and Tierney Pfirman scored 11 for the Terrapins (27-6), who will face the winner between No. 3 Louisville and No. 7 LSU in the Elite Eight.

Meighan Simmons tallied 31 points while Jasmine Jones had 11 points for the Lady Vols, who ended their campaign with a 29-6 mark. Bashaara Graves grabbed 14 rebounds and Isabelle Harrison had 10 caroms for Tennessee.

The Terrapins forced 22 turnovers and had a 19-9 scoring edge off of those takeaways. Overall, Maryland scored 14 points off 14 Tennessee turnovers in the first half.

Maryland also led the Vols in almost every aspect of the game — 17-9 in second-chance points and 38-28 on points in the paint.

Maryland matched its largest lead of the game when Thomas split a double team for layup that made it 51-33 with 12 minutes left in regulation.

Simmons shook off a sub-par first half, scoring 14 of her team’s next 19 points to help the Volunteers get within 60-52 with 6:27 to play

However, the Terrapins pushed the lead back into double figures with Mincy burying a triple and Thomas adding a layup and a jumper for a 67-53 advantage.
