Lakeland, FL, United States (4E Sports) – Ian Kinsler, Austin Jackson and Victor Martinez each had two hits and an RBI to carry the Detroit Tigers to a 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays Friday at Joke Marchant Stadium.
One day after signing a $300 million deal, Miguel Cabrera went 1-for-3 as the designated hitter while Alex Avila smacked his first homer of spring as Detroit pounded out 12 hits to improve to 15-12.
Joba Chamberlain (1-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless opening frame, with one walk and a strikeout.
Matt Moore (3-2) started for the Rays, allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings with four strikeouts.
It was an encouraging start for Moore, who didn’t walk a batter after issuing 10 free passes over his previous two starts.
“For me, personally, it’s a little bit easier to walk away from a game like this, where I was in a zone,” Moore said. “They beat me. I didn’t put them on. Try to work around some of those base hits, and we’ll be ready for the season.”
Brandon Guyer had two hits, including a two-run ninth-inning homer, for the Rays. Logan Forsythe also had two hits for Tampa Bay, which dropped to 16-7.
Rajai Davis hit a leadoff single, took second base on a wild pitch and scored on a Kinsler single for a 1-0 Tigers lead.
Moore regrouped after Cabrera’s liner into shallow center, striking out Victor Martinez and Torii Hunter, but he gave up a second run when Austin Jackson’s ground ball through the left side sent Kinsler home from second.
Kinsler’s second run off Moore began with a leadoff single before two wild pitches put him in position to score on a Martinez liner into left.
Avila’s home run came off Joel Peralta. It was just his fourth extra-base hit in a Spring Training that saw him bat .306 (15-for-49) with four RBIs. Dominic Ficociello added an RBI single in the seventh.
