Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Three members of a counter-assault team (CAT) forming part of President Barack Obama’s security escorts have been sent home from Amsterdam for drinking alcohol before their scheduled duty, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The CAT members sent to Netherlands ahead of Obama’s arrival there on Monday for a nuclear summit were found to be drinking on Saturday evening and Sunday morning in a hotel. One of the three who passed out in a hotel hallway was reported to the U.S. embassy, which then alerted the security team.

Under Secret Service rules, agents on official trips are prohibited from drinking alcohol 10 hours before their duty. The three disciplined CAT members violated the rule so they were recalled, a spokesman of the Secret Service said.

The CAT is different from the plainclothes Secret Service agents who shadow the president wherever he goes. They are in black combat uniforms and work behind the scenes. They are deployed in presidential motorcades tailing the president’s limousine and at airports where Air Force One takes off and lands. They also evacuate those in danger and repel attacks on the president.
