Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Nick Cannon’s “white face” photo has sparked some controversy, but the singer said that it is but a move to promote his new album “White People Party Music.”

On Monday, Cannon posted a photo of himself on Instagram looking like a Caucasian man and captioned it, “It’s official… I’m White!!!” He also added a video introducing his transformed self as Connor Smallnut.

The “America’s Got Talent” judge’s photo and choice of theme has since sparked controversy, with some people expressing disgust at how “racist” it is.

Meanwhile, Cannon explained to US Weekly’s Ian Drew the reason behind it saying, “You go to a party and white people are having more fun than anybody. They know how to have a good time! I could have named the album ‘Purple People Party Music’ and you’d still get the same album, but it was just one of those things. You know, you deal with things like race, and people get uptight, so why not?”

He added, “As a DJ, you name all your different playlists and your crates that you keep your music in. I had all these crates, and thought about mixing them from Dirty South to Midwest — and one crate is called White People Party Music,” he said. “It’s hilarious — when I came up with that title, I thought I have to name my album that. I just kind of stuck with it from there.”

The 33-year-old husband of singer Mariah Carey, noticing the mixed reactions, wrote on Twitter, “It’s funny how people take themselves so seriously. People love drama! We feed off of it. Just relax and have fun!!”

Cannon’s “White People Party Music” is set for release in stores on April 1.
