Newark, NJ, United States (4E Sports) – Jon Merrill had a goal and an assist while Cory Schneider made 21 saves as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2 Sunday at Prudential Center.

Damien Brunner scored in the first period before rookie defenseman Merrill set up a second-period breakaway goal by Patrik Elias.

Merrill also scored 32 seconds after Elias as the Devils built a 3-0 lead.

Tyle Bozak scored at 5:26 of the second period by redirecting a pass by Morgan Rielly.

Then Phil Kessel followed with a goal with 1:31 to play.

The Leafs still had plenty of good scoring chances including attempts by Dion Phaneuf and Cody Franson, but Schneider stopped all of it.
