Virginia pulls away late to silence Coastal Carolina

Raleigh, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Anthony Gill scored 17 to help No. 1 seed Virginia Cavaliers outlast the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers, 70-59 Friday at PNC Arena.

Malcolm Brogdon scored 14 points while London Perrantes added 12 points and six assists for Virginia (29-6).

El Hadji Ndieguene and Eric Smith hit 3-pointers while Badou Diagne had two free throws to give Coastal Carolina a 31-21 lead at 4:25 of the first half.

Coastal Carolina (21-13) managed to hang on a five-point lead at halftime and had a last taste of the lead following Diagne’s 3-pointer that made it 38-32 with 18:07 remaining.

Brogdon had five points while Joe Harris nailed a 3-pointer as Virginia used a 10-0 run to overtake Coastal Carolina, 42-38.

The game was tied at 47 before Evan Nolte’s 3s powered a 23-7 spurt that finally put the game away.

Virginia advanced to Sunday’s third round to face No. 8 seed Memphis.

Diagne scored 14 and Warren Gillis added 13 to lead Coastal Carolina.
