Vienna, Vienna, Austria (4E) – Hans Bernhard of Mayerhofgasse 4/10 Vienna Austria plans to buy Google with a little help of… well Google. His website gwei.org (Google Will Eat Itself) is designed to use ad revenues generated by Google AdWord payments to buy a controlling share of Google’s stock. And he represents that he is surprising farther along than many would have guessed.
His website states,
“We generate money by serving Google text advertisements on a network of hidden Websites. With this money we automatically buy Google shares. We buy Google via their own advertisement! Google eats itself – but in the end “we” own it!”
The plan is busily moving toward a Google Acquisition expected to take place in just under 202,345,118 years as calculated by the site. But the interesting part is that they also represent that they’ve raised over US$405,400.00. The site even shows pictures of “Google Cheques” it has purportedly earned from Google using this scheme.
All in all it seems to be part of a very fun exercise using technology to create art through Media Hacking and development of Conceptual Art experiences. Hans Bernhard seems to be making a statement about how the world should run and who should actually be in charge of the massive data Google collects on everyone.
What would Bernhard like to see happen once he owns Google? His site states, “After this process we hand over the common ownership of “our” Google Shares to the GTTP Ltd. [Google To The People Public Company] which distributes them back to the users (clickers) / public.”
Will Bernhard’s “autocannibalistic” takeover model acquire Google? Will it be the new M&A darling of Wall Street? Even Bernhard does not seem to think that will happen. His work is self-titled “Media Hactivism”. He appears to be doing it to make a point and get attention. And that he does. His other sites including http://www.hansbernhard.com/ and http://www.ubermorgen.com/ show projects like Nazi Line that seem bent on garishly provoking attention in unique, sometimes upsetting, often-raw but always interesting ways. He’s poking us in the eye to make us see.
The romantic idea of everyone owning Google falls apart in the face of reality where one immediately realizes we’ve simply replaced Google with GTTP Ltd and then also understands that we are only 200+ million years away from needing worry about it.
