Arizona topples upset-minded Weber State

San Diego, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Aaron Gordon had 16 points, eight boards and five blocks as the Arizona Wildcats topped the Weber State Wildcats, 69-59 in the West Regional on Friday at Viejas Arena at Aztec Bowl.

Nick Johnson top scored with 18 for the win.

Weber State held Arizona without a field for nearly 5 minutes during a game-opening 10-2 run as Joel Bolomboy scored four while Davion Berry and Richaud Gauttens hit 3-pointers.

But Arizona (31-4) had five blocks and two steals as it forced Weber State to miss 12 of 13 shots.

That helped Arizona with runs of 14-2 and 13-3 to go up 32-20 at halftime.

Then Johnson had a layup and a 3-pointer in an 11-2 second half blast that allowed Arizona to take a 50-29 lead with 11:36 left.

Berry hit two 3-pointers, scored with a layup and connected on eight free throw attempts while Gittens added 11 points

to lead a late Weber State (19-12) surge.

It cut Arizona’s lead to nine points three times in the closing minutes but Johnson would hit a 3-pointer andd score of free thows while Gordon had a layup to keep Weber State at bay.

Berry scored 24 and Bolomboy had 11 points and 16 rebounds for the losing effort.
