Dayton, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Chris Eversley scored 19 to push the Cal Poly Mustangs past the Texas Southern Tigers, 81-69 in the First Four round of the NCAA tournament Wednesday at University of Dayton Arena.
Dave Nwaba added 17 points and Brian Bennett was a perfect 5 for 5 from the field for Cal Poly, the team with the worst record in the tournament (14-19).
The game was close until a Reese Morgan 3-pointer ignited an 11-0 run by Cal Poly for a 40-28 lead with 3:45 left in the first half.
Cal Poly was able to maintain its 12-point advantage until halftime at 44-32 and led by as much as 16 early in the second.
Texas Southern cut the lead to 73-66 with 2:16 left, but Cal Poly hit eight of 10 fouls shots over the last 1:42 to push their lead to 81-66 and secure the win.
Cal Poly moves on to the second round to face top-seeded Wichita State (34-0) Friday.
Aaric Murray had 38 points to lead Texas Southern (19-15), champions of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
