Orlando, FL, United States (4E) – A wing panel of a Delta Air Lines plane fell off during its flight from Orlando to Atlanta on Sunday but the Boeing 757′s passengers and crews were not endangered and the jet landed safely afterwards.

The 179 passengers and six crew members of Delta Flight 2412 were unharmed when it landed at Hartsdale-Jackson Atlanta International Airport around 7:30 p.m., according to Delta spokeswoman Lindsay McDuff.

The panel in the forward edge of the right wing close to the fuselage was missing and no one knows when it fell off during the flight, McDuff said. The incident is being investigated, she said.

A passenger heard a big boom and looked out the window to see the uncovered section of the wing. A passenger also took a photo of the wing with the missing panel that exposed gears and wiring underneath.

The crew declared an emergency while on approach to the Atlanta airport, said another Delta spokesman, Anthony Black. The plane was towed to the gate after it landed, Black said.
