Bryce Cotton shines as Providence tops Creighton for Big East title

New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Senior guard Bryce Cotton scored 23 to lead the Providence Friars over Creighton Bluejays, 65-58 Saturday at Madison Square Garden.

The win clinched the Big East tournament title for Providence (23-11).

Cotton scored seven points in a 9-0 run that gave Providence a 17-9 lead until 6:27 of the first half.

It was Tyler Harris who topscored for Providence with nine points in the first half as they took a 26-17 lead at halftime.

Cotton remained hot, scorching Creighton (26-7) with 12 points in the first eight minutes as Providence enjoyed a 47-35 lead.

But Doug McDermott knocked in four 3-pointers and two free throws as Grant Gibbs added a 3-pointer and a jumper in the next 11 and a half minutes to cut Providence’s lead to 58-56.

Providence outscored Creighton 7-2 the rest of the game for the win.

McDermott, who came in leading the nation in scoring with 26.5 average, finished 10-for-19 from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range, for 27 points.
