Greensboro, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Joe Harris fired a season-high tying 20 points while Anthony Gill chipped in 16 as No. 6 Virginia advanced to the ACC Tournament semifinal via a 64-51 win over Florida State Friday at Greensboro Coliseum.
Harris and Gill were the only players in double digits but their efforts were enough to send the Cavaliers to the ACC semifinal for the first time since 1995.
London Perrantes, Malcolm Brogdon and Darion Atkins scored six points apiece for the Cavaliers (26-6), who will play the winner between North Carolina and Pittsburgh.
Okaro White scored 17 points, Aaron Thomas chipped in 13 and Ian Miller had 10 for the Seminoles (19-13), who beat Maryland in the second round Thursday. They must now wait for an at-large NCAA Tournament bid.
Florida State opened the game with the first two buckets and built a 9-5 lead but Harris keyed a 9-2 attack that gave Virginia a 14-11 margin midway through the first half.
A triple by Perrantes snapped a 23-23 tie with just over three minutes left and Virginia never trailed again. The Cavaliers went into the break with a 32-27 advantage after Gill drained a jumper from the lane at the buzzer.
The Cavaliers started the second half with an 11-4 run, sparked by a Perrantes’ triple, to extend their advantage to 43-33.
A basket by Devon Bookert kept the Seminoles within single digits but the Cavaliers put it away with a 7-0 run ignited by a three-pointer by Harris and four points from Atkins for a 52-37 cushion.
The Cavaliers went unchallenged from there as they cruised to an easy victory.
