Ohio State edges Purdue behind LaQuinton Ross’ double-double

Indianapolis, IN, United States (4E Sports) – LaQuinton Ross had 19 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks to lead No. 24 Ohio State Buckeyes in edging the Purdue Boilermakers, 63-61 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Aaron Craft added 16 points and Lenzelle Smith Jr. scored nine to become the 26th player in school history with 1,000 career points.

Ronnie Johnson and A.J. Hammons each scored six points for Purdue in the first half as they hung around and only trailed 30-27 at halftime.

A 3-point play by Ronnie Johnson tied the game at 30 before Sam Thompson and Ross answered with field goals to give Ohio State a 34-30 lead.

Terence Johnson then scored six straight points to give Purdue a 36-34 advantage, the first of 10 lead exchanges in the second half.

Craft and Ross started the key run that gave Ohio State a 59-54 edge.

Hammons had layup that allowed Purdue to close in 61-60 with 18.1 seconds left.

Craft and Smith each went one of two in free throws to give Ohio State a 63-60 lead with five seconds left.

Ohio State (24-8) then fouled Ronnie Johnson, who made the first and missed the second but Purdue was awarded possession.

Terone Johnson missed a buzzer-beating 3-pointer as the Ohio State escaped with the win.

A.J. Hammons finished with 15 points and nine rebounds to lead Purdue (15-17). Ronnie Johnson had 12 points and Terone Johnson added 10.
