Greensboro, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Coron Williams fired a season-best 25 points on 7-for-8 shooting while Devin Thomas added 19 points and 10 boards as Wake Forest defeated Notre Dame, 81-69, in the first round of the ACC tournament Wednesday at Greensboro Coliseum.
Arnaud-William Adala Moto added 12 points while all players fielded by coach Jeff Bzdelik scored as the 12th seed Demons Deacons (17-15) advanced to the second round against fifth seed Pittsburgh (23-8).
The victory was the Demon Deacons’ first ACC win since beating Georgia Tech, 114-112, in first round of the 2007 event under late coach Skip Prosser.
The Demon Deacons made 25 of 41 shots for 61 percent, including a 7-for-10 clip from beyond the arc. They also outrebounded the Fighting Irish, 33-23.
Pat Connaughton scored 19 points while Zach Auguste added 14 points and nine boards as the Fighting Irish (15-17) dropped their first ACC tournament game.
Eric Atkins had 13 points and seven boards while Garrick Sherman added 12 points for the Fighting Irish, who shot 24-for-60 from the floor for 40 percent.
The Demon Deacons led by as many as 14 points in the second half after Thomas completed a three-point play with 6:37 left. A triple by Eric Atkins brought the Fighting Irish within 68-62.
Wake Forest then sank 16 of their last 19 foul shots to keep the Fighting Irish at bay.
