Houston, TX, United States (4E Sports) – Terry Rose fired 22 points on 8-for-13 shooting while Chandler Thomas added 20 points and 14 boards to carry Grambling State to an 84-75 upset win over seventh seed Jackson State Tuesday in the first round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference at Toyota Center.
Artwan Scott added 16 points while A’Torri Shine had eight markers as the Tigers (5-23) notched only their fifth win of the season.
With the victory, Grambling made it to the quarterfinals where it will play second seed Texas Southern Wednesday.
Julysses Nobles scored 28 points on 9-for-23 shooting, Javeres Brent added 12 and Derell Taylor scored 11 off the bench as the Tigers ended their season with an 11-20 record.
Trailing by three, Jackson State opened the second half with a 12-6 behind Nobles and Brent run to take a 51-48 lead.
Jackson State extended it to five, 58-53, with 12:57 remaining before Grambling State launched a 16-4 run to take a 69-62 advantage.
Jackson State came within 75-73 with 2:19 left before Grambling State closed the game with a 9-9-2 run to seal the victory.
