London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Jordi Gomez and James Perch scored in each half to carry defending champion Wigan to a 2-1 win over Manchester City and a spot in the semifinal round of the FA Cup Sunday at Etihad Stadium.
Gomez scored in the 27th minute while Perch made it a two-goal game in the 47th as Wigan advanced to the semifinal round against Arsenal.
Samir Nasri scored but his efforts weren’t enough as City’s FA Cup campaign was again ended by Wigan.
City looked unusually wasteful in possession and just minutes after Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas had combined well to threaten former England international Scott Carson, the visitors were in front.
Martin Demichelis tripped the onrushing Marc-Antoine Fortune in the box and referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot. Gomez made no mistake and the underdogs were in front.
The home side offered little in response throughout the remainder of the half and they were made to pay in the opening stages of the second when Latics doubled their lead.
James McArthur burst past three opposition defenders and crossed for Perch who beat his man to poke home.
Two goals down and with their hopes of domestic dominance slipping away, Manuel Pellegrini introduced David Silva, James Milner and Edin Dzeko.
Nasri restored his side’s hopes, however, when he found the bottom corner from 18 yards in the 68th minute but Dzeko’s two attempts were blocked and went off the post.
Meanwhile, Hull City defeated Sunderland, 3-0, to earn a semifinal date against Sheffield United, which blanked Charlton Athletic. 2-0.
“Sheffield United gave me my chance in management a long, long time ago,” said Hull manager Steve Bruce.
The semifinal will be played at Wembley Stadium on April 12 and 13.
