Las Vegas, NV, United States (4E Sports) – Canelo Alvarez gave Alfredo Angulo a one-sided beating before earning a 10th round technical knockout win in their junior middleweight fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
At the time of the stoppage, Alvarez was ahead 89-82 on two scorecards and 88-83 on the third.
“I definitely rebounded from the Mayweather fight with a strong performance,” said Alvarez. “I came here and did my job.”
Alvarez (43-1-1, 31 KOs), 23, landed frequently as Angulo offered nothing in return.
By the fifth round, Angulo’s left eye was swelling.
Angulo landed his best punches in the eight, with Alvarez answering back.
After Alvarez snapped Angulo’s head back with a left hook in the ninth, referee Tony Weeks approached the ringside doctor.
When Alvarez began to connect again, Weeks stepped in and waved off the fight at 2:13 of the 10th.
Angulo felt the referee was wrong in calling the stoppage.
“My plan was to work harder in the final four or three rounds. I had good preparation for this fight,” he quipped.
Virgil Hunter, Angulo’s trainer, noted that his fighter was coming on strong at the time of the stoppage.
