Morgantown, WV, United States (4E Sports) – Eron Harris scored 28 points on 5-of-7 shooting from 3-point range to lead West Virginia to a 92-86 upset win over No. 8 Kansas Saturday at WVU Coliseum.
Juwan Staten recorded 24 points, nine assists and five rebounds while Devin Williams finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds for the Mountaineers, who improved to 17-14 (9-9 Big 12).
However, West Virginia needs some help from Iowa State and Kansas State later in the day to strengthen its chances for a first-round bye in the Big 12 tournament.
Freshman Andrew Wiggins came up with his most impressive performance of the season, scoring a season-high 41 points to go with eight rebounds, five steals, four blocks and two assists.
Wiggins, the only player in the last 15 seasons with four steals and four blocks in a 40-point game, went 12-for-18 from the field and finished 15-for-19 from the free-throw line.
Perry Ellis added 14 points for the Jayhawks (23-8, 14-4), who dropped two of their last three regular-season games but already secured the top seed in the upcoming Big 12 tournament.
Kansas trailed West Virginia, 50-38, at the half. It’s the most points the Jayhawks have allowed in the first half this season, and the 2nd-most they’ve allowed in a half all season (52 by Wake Forest in the 2nd half on November 28).
The Mountaineers led by as many as 25 in the second half, but saw that lead evaporate to just five with less than a minute to go. WVU went 7-for-8 from the line down the stretch to seal its first-ever win over Kansas.
