Virginia subdues Syracuse with strong second half

Charlottesvville, VA, United States (4E Sports) – Malcolm Brogdon scored 19 points to push the No. 12 Virginia Cavaliers past No. 4 Syracuse Orange, 75-56 Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena.

Akil Mitchell added 12 points and nine rebounds and Mike Tobey and Justin Anderson scored 11 each for Virginia (25-5, 16-1 ACC).

With the win, Virginia clinched the top seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Virginia had first-half runs of 9-0 and 8-2 in building a 22-15 lead, but Syracuse answered with a 13-2 burst with Tyler Ennis scoring five points as the Orange took a 28-24 lead.

Justin Anderson hit a 3-pointer with 47 seconds left that allowed Virginia to cut the lead to 28-27 at the half.

The game was close during the first part of the second half until Brogdon broke a 42-all tie with two free throws and a jumper to give Virginia a 46-42 lead.

After a turnover by the Orange, London Perrantes hit a 3-pointer as Virginia expanded its lead to 49-42.

The Cavs led 56-45 with 5:15 left when Brogdon and Joe Harris scored six points each as Virginia outscored Syracuse, 19-11, the rest of the way.

Tyler Ennis and C.J. Fair scored 13 each to lead Syracuse (26-3, 13-3).
