San Francisco, CA, United States (4E) – Billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper has begun collecting signatures for his petition to divide California into six states.

In his own press conference at Draper University on Monday, Draper said many people are helping him raise money to gather the needed signatures of 807,615 registered voters by April to put his initiative in the November ballot. However, even if voters approved his plan, the U.S. Congress still has to approve it.

Draper insisted he is serious of his plan, which will create the states of Jefferson, North California, Silicon Valley, Central California, West California, South California. Leaving California undivided is a crime as the state’s 38 million population is too big to manage, said the Silicon Valley venture capitalist with investments in tech startups.

“This is something I just have to do. I just feel it,” Draper said, according to SFGate. “I know that this will really improve the lives of Californians and set a new precedent for how government works.”

Under his proposal, Jefferson will consists of rural counties in far northern California. North California would include Marin and Sonoma counties and the greater Sacramento area.

San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Santa Cruz and Monterey counties would be part of the state of Silicon Valley. San Diego and Orange County would form South California while Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Santa Barbara would be part of West California. Fresno and the San Joaquin Valleys would be Central California.

Lawmakers are reportedly not keen on dividing California due to the added bureaucracy it will create.
