Washington, DC, United States (4E) – President Barack Obama held a meeting with the Dalai Lama on Friday, amidst China’s opposition.

The White House said in a statement that Obama “reiterated his strong support for the preservation of Tibet’s unique religious, cultural, and linguistic traditions and the protection of human rights for Tibetans” in China.

China has earlier urged urged Obama to call off the meeting at the White House with the Tibetan leader.

China said the meeting will “severely impair China-U.S. relations.”
