Sochi, Russian Federation (NewsBahn) – There were better-known figure skaters than Russian Adelina Sotnikova before the Olympics, but that will no longer be the case.
The 17-year-old knocked off defending champion Kim Yu-na of South Korea to capture the gold medal Wednesday.
Teammate Adelina Sotnikova, who won a national championship in 2009, when she was just 12 and perhaps the most talented and flamboyant of all the skaters, settled for fifth.
Italy’s Carolina Kostner took bronze, while Americans Gracie Gold and Ashley Wagner were fourth and seventh, respectively.
The Russians have won women’s, pairs and team at these Olympics.
