San Francisco, CA, United States (4E) – Samsung’s latest Gear smartwatch will not run on Google’s Android operating system. The South Korean company will use its very own Tizen operating system on its latest smartwatch, according to sources. The people familiar with the situation will unveil the new Gear smartwatch at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
“Samsung is trying to protect its own long-term interests, not fortifying Google’s Android camp while building their own camp around Tizen. The version of Tizen that powers the Gear will be different,” Network Communications’ VP of digital media Stuart Richens said. Network Communications is a mobile app developer.
Tizen is Samsung’s open source project, which is a software platform for its smart devices. It was released last year but had a rough launch. But in recent days, Samsung has managed to partner with 15 firms including Baidu and Sprint for the use of Tizen.
The first Samsung Gear ran on Android and was a success. The company wants to build on that momentum and hopes that Tizen will be well-received along with the new Gear.
“If Samsung releases more Tizen devices, that’s potentially a big opportunity,” Richens added.
