Sochi, Russian Federation (4E Sports) – Great Britain split its last two assignments to clinch a spot in the semifinal of the women’s curling event of the Sochi Winter Olympics.
The British women defeated Russia, 9-6, and lost to Denmark, 8-7, but they clinched a spot in the last four against Canada Wednesday.
“Our first goal was to finish top four and that’s exactly what we’ve done,” skipper Eve Muirhead said.
Muirhead led the women’s team to victory over Russia but it failed to end their round-robin campaign on a positive note after losing to Denmark.
“We came out here to make the top four and we’re super happy,” said Muirhead. “We didn’t finish the game the way we would have liked but we’ll move on.”
In the other semifinal, Switzerland will take on Sweden.
On the men’s side, Great Britain lost to China, 6-5, and will take on Norway Tuesday for a place in the semifinal.
The men’s final round-robin match was a tight affair, with both sides trading singles until China scored two in the fourth end.
David Murdoch’s team pulled it back to 5-5 after nine ends but China skipper Liu Rui scored a perfect draw to take the final point and the win.
