Jackson, MS, United States (4E) – A Mississippi woman pregnant with triplets gave birth to four baby girls last week to the surprise of herself and doctors who delivered the rare quadruplets by caesarian section.
Kimberly Fugate, 42, delivered the four identical babies three months earlier or at their 28th week at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The babies named Kenleigh Rosa, Kristen Sue, Kayleigh Pearl and Kelsey Roxanne were placed in neonatal intensive for being premature.
The fourth baby was apparently hidden and missed by numerous ultransounds.
Fugate’s pregnancy was doubly rare because she did not use fertilization drugs or treatments, according to Dr. James Bofill, a professor of maternal fetal medicine at the hospital.
“The odds of spontaneous quadruplets is one in every 729,000 live births,” ABC news quoted Bofill as saying. “The chances of having identical quadruplets are almost incalculable.”
Fugate and husband Craig Fugate now have five children, including 10-year-old daughter Katelyn.
