Tempe, AZ, United States (4E Sports) – Jordan Bachynski had eight blocks, 13 points and seven rebounds to lead the Arizona State Sun Devils in a double overtime upset of Arizona Wildcats, 69-66, Friday at Wells Fargo Arena.
Arizona State got 29 points from its top scorer, Jermaine Marshall , including eight in the second overtime.
Marshall was hot from the start, scoring 12 of Arizona State’s 21 points in the first half by hitting 5 of 10, while the rest of the team went 3-for-17.
But it was No. 2 Arizona that led at halftime, 26-21, mainly by outrebounding Arizona State, 26-15.
Arizona State (19-6, 8-4 Pac-12) still leaned on Marshall for 10 of the team’s 30 points in the second half, allowing them to lead Arizona, 51-46, with 2:38 left in regulation.
But Aaron Gordon hit a jumper and connected on a free throw and TJ McConnell scored on a layup to tie the game.
In the first overtime, Bachynski scored four and Jahii Carson accounted for two of Arizona State’s six points, which were answered by Kaleb Tarczewski’s four free throws and McConnell’s two-point jumper for Arizona.
Marshall made a pair of 3-pointers in the second overtime, then scored on a drive with 14 seconds left to put Arizona State up, 67-66.
Arizona sent the ball in McConnell’s hand for the final shot, but it was blocked by Bachynski that led to a breakaway dunk by Carson.
Tarczewski had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Gordon had 13 points and 10 rebounds to lead Arizona (23-2, 10-2).
McConnell top scored for Arizona with 17 on top of five rebounds.
