US blanks Switzerland in women’s hockey

Sochi, Russian Federation (4E Sports) – Kendall Coyne and Amanda Kessel recorded two goals and two assists apiece to lead the United States to a 9-0 thrashing of Switzerland in Monday’s women’s hockey showdown at the Sochi Winter Games.

Monique Lamoureux added two goals, Hilary Knight and Brianna Decker each had a goal and an assist while Alex Carpenter added a goal as the Americans improved to 2-0 in the tournament ahead of their showdown with archrival Canada.

The Americans broke open a scoreless game midway through the first period with three goals in 55 seconds and five in 6:22 and never looked back.

Goaltender Molly Schaus was the recipient of the offensive onslaught and picked up the victory in her first tournament action.

Swiss goalie Florence Schelling received very little help defensively from her teammates and suffered the loss.

The Americans will face Canada Wednesday. The Canadians were scheduled to play Finland later Monday.
