Washington, DC, United States (4E) – The announcement of an Iranian naval official that Iranian warships are sailing towards the U.S. maritime border in the Atlantic is no cause for alarm, a U.S. defense official said on Saturday.
All navies are free to sail on international waters, said the defense official who declined to be identified.
Another U.S. military official said there is no information confirming the claim of Iranian Admiral Afshin Rezayee Haddad.
Haddad announced on Saturday that an Iranian naval fleet is nearing the Atlantic Ocean via South Africa in response to the U.S. naval presence in the Persian Gulf. The Iranian media reported that the fleet consists of a destroyer and a helicopter transport vessel.
Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday the naval deployment as proof that Iran has not moderated its international aggression despite the easing of economic sanctions on the Islamic state in exchange for the downgrading of its nuclear program.
Netanyahu made the remark during a cabinet meeting.
Israel remains unconvinced that Iran’s nuclear program is only for peaceful purposes as insisted by Tehran.
