Sochi, Russian Federation (4E Sports) – American Heidi Kloser dropped out of mogul skiing competition at Sochi due to injuries sustained in a crash during warm-ups before qualification began Thursday.
The 21-year-old skier suffered a full tear of her anterior cruciate ligament, a partial tear of her medial collateral ligament and an impact bruise to her tibial plateau in her knee, as well as an impact fracture to her femur.
She was helped off the mountain and was taken to the medical clinic in the athletes village for evaluation.
“I saw an American coach quickly put his skis on and rush down and I thought, Oh, no, that’s Heidi,” said fellow American and defending Olympic gold medalist Hannah Kearney, who leads the competition after the first qualifying run.
Kloser, who stood fourth in the World Cup standings, was devastated to see her Olympic hopes vanish as she was just about to head off for the starting gate.
Her father, Mike, said on his Facebook page that Heidi asked him if he still considered her an Olympian even though she didn’t make it to the starting line in her first games.
