San Francisco, CA, United States (4E) – Amazon has thrown itself in the video game industry with its purchase of independent game studio Double Helix Games. Amazon and Double Helix confirmed the acquisition to CNET and TechCrunch. The financial details of the acquisition wasn’t revealed but the purpose of the deal was to get talent.

“Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers,” Amazon told TechCrunch.

Double Helix Games was founded seven years ago with the merger of two studios — The Collective and Shiny Entertainment. The two studios have a proven record with popular games such as Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Earthworm Jim.

Rumors of Amazon building a video game console are now legitimate. Amazon has a game studio in Irvine, California but it has been quiet since 2012 when it launched a social game development office.

According to rumors, Amazon plans to develop a video game console in the near future. The rumored console will run on Android and allow streaming games.
