DUBOIS — DuBois Area High School on Saturday was the site of the annual District 9 Team Wrestling Championships. The number one seed St. Marys Flying Dutch (8-1) easily disposed of the number four seed Punxsutawney Chucks (4-7) in one semifinal, 47-20. The other semifinal, however, between number two seed Clearfield and number three seed DuBois figured to be a toss up.

Clearfield had beaten DuBois 45-30 back in the season opener on December 10, but would be without the services of two of their top three bout winners on the year – Noah Cline and Mike Beck. The toss up turned into another memorable match between the two longtime rivals.

The back and forth affair started at 106 with DuBois picking up a quick fall; but the Bison returned the favor with a Zane Morgan fall at 113 to knot the score at six.

The Beavers then sandwiched regular decisions around a forfeit to take an 18-6 lead.

At 138 Tallin Norris picked up some much needed bonus points with a 16-8 win; then DuBois picked up a first period fall at 145 to extend their lead to 14 points at 24-10 halfway through the match.

Clearfield then swung the momentum their way by picking up 24 points over the next four bouts to grab a 10-point lead at 34-24.

Grant Climie at 152, Tristan Carruthers at 160, and Logan Lykens at 170 each picked up falls, while Travis Ogden received a forfeit at 182. At the end of the day, Ogden had taken over the team lead in wins, over the idle Cline’s 20, with 21.

The Bison then handed the lead back to the Beavers with forfeits at 195 and 220.

With the Beavers clinging to a 36-34 lead, the match came down to heavyweight.

Through six minutes Clearfield’s Jake Verchick and DuBois’ Robert Zilhaver were knotted at one. Overtime would have to decide it. There, Verchick notched the winning takedown for the sudden victory and the right to face the Dutch in the championship match.

St. Marys (8-1) had beaten the Bison 48-28 just a week ago. With two top wrestlers still out for the Bison (9-5), it was a long shot. The Flying Dutch proved their mettle by picking up seven falls, five of them in the opening period, to easily out-distance the Bison once again, 51-15.

Winners for Clearfield were Josiah McClarren, Travis Ogden, and Jake Verchick by regular decision; and Nate Lash by fall.

St. Marys will now move on to the PIAA AAA State Team Wrestling Championship in Hershey on Thursday and will have to face District 11 champion Nazareth.

Brookville won the AA team title and will face District 2 champion Western Wayne on Thursday in Hershey as well.

With the win against DuBois, the Bison have assured themselves of a winning season as they stand at 9-5 with three dual meets remaining before the post- season begins in Clarion on February 21.

The Bison will hit the road on Tuesday when they travel to Philipsburg to face the Mounties (9-5). Thursday’s match at Huntingdon will have to be postponed, or possibly cancelled, as the Bearcats (17-1) won the District 6 AA team title over West Branch and will be competing in Hershey Thursday.
