Kansas City, MO, United States (4E Sports) – Left-hander Bruce Chen has agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Royals pending a physical.
According to reports, the deal was worth at least $4.25 million, including a $3.25 million salary and possible $1.25 million in performance bonuses for 2014. Also included is a mutual option for 2015 for $5.5 million with a buyout of $1 million.
Chen, who earned $4.5 million last year, worked from the bullpen in the first half before making it to the rotation for the second half. Overall, he was 9-4 with a 3.27 ERA in 34 games (15 starts).
Aside from the Royals, the 36-year-old Chen was also pursued by the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers.
Chen had spent the last five years with the Royals, leading them in victories in three straight seasons.
“I enjoyed my time there, I met my wife there and it’s a very good organization. I think 2014 can be a very special year for the Kansas City Royals,” Chen said Wednesday.
With Chen signed, the Royals will focus on keeping another free-agent pitcher in Ervin Santana, who went 9-10 last season.
