Columbus, OH, United States (4E Sports) – D.J. Newbill scored 25, including a 3 that forced the extra session and the winning jumper in overtime, to lift Penn State 71-70 over the Ohio State Buckeyes Wednesday at Value City Arena.
Incidentally, the winning shot was made over Aaron Craft, considered one of the nation’s best one-on-one defenders.
Brandon Taylor added 19 points, Graham Woodward had 11 as Penn State and Tim Frazier had eight points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Penn State.
The No. 24 Ohio State led 59-48 with 7:58 remaining.
Newbill scored eight, including a 3-pointer, in a 15-2 Penn State run to tie the game at 62 with 1:09 left.
Craft then scored on a drive with 34 seconds and a free throw by Lenzelle Smith Jr. put the Buckeyes up 65-62.
After a timeout with 13 seconds left, Newbill hit a 3-pointer to force overtime.
With 39.4 seconds left in overtime, Newbill drove the lane for a layup to cut the lead to 70-69.
After a Buckeyes turnover, Newbill took the ball one-on-one against Craft for the win, which ended Ohio State’s string of victories in the series at 18.
Ohio State (16-5, 3-5) has lost five of six after a 15-0 start that saw it rise to No. 3 in the polls.
LaQuinton Ross led Ohio State with 16 points.
