Starkville, MS, United States (4E Sports) – Senior forward Casey Prather tallied 16 points and seven boards while Patric Young added 12 markers and eight caroms as No. 3 Florida overcame a sluggishstart en route to a 62-51 win over Mississippi State Thursday at Humphrey Coliseum.
With the win, the Gators (18-2) extended their winning streak to 12 games and remained unbeaten in SEC play with a 7-0 mark.
With its fourth straight conference road win, Florida increased its lead to two full games over SEC rivals Kentucky and Ole Miss.
The Gators won back-to-back games at “The Hump” for the first time since the 2001 and 2003 seasons. They have now defeated the Bulldogs four straight for the first time since winning 12 in a row in the series from 1984-89.
Michael Frazier finished with nine points, all from beyond the arc. He hit a crucial three with 2:28 to go that pushed Florida’s lead to double digits. Scott Wilbekin and Dorian Finney-Smith finished with eight points apiece.
Despite shooting just 2-for-9 from the floor, Wilbekin effectively guided the Gators with eight assists while Finney-Smith grabbed nine caroms.
Colin Borchert scored 15 points and grabbed seven boards, Craig Sword had 12 points and I.J. Ready added 10 for the Bulldogs (13-7, 3-4 SEC), who lost for the second straight time.
The Gators led by just one at the break but grabbed an 11-point lead after outscoring the Bulldogs, 20-10 in the first 10 minutes of the second half.
The Gators will next face Texas A&M (12-8, 3-4) Saturday at the O’Connell Center. The Aggies have dropped four straight league games.
