CURWENSVILLE – After getting beaten 55-34 the first time that Curwensville played the DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) Lady Cardinals, in DuBois, on January 3; the Lady Tide showed that they could stay with DCC on Monday night on Curwensville’s home floor.

Although this game was much tighter, the Lady Tide still found themselves on the short end, losing to the Lady Cardinals in a somewhat lower scoring game, 34-27.

DCC now has won nine straight contests to improve to 11-4 on the season while the Lady Tide have dropped its last two games to fall to 9-6.

Curwensville Head Coach Rusty McCracken said after the game, “We were certainly much more aggressive against them (DCC) tonight.  We definitely did not back down and that’s a positive.”

The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead early in the opening period, but the Curwensville girls would end up matching points with their guests as the first frame ended in a tie, 8-8.

Curwensville took its first, and last, lead of the game, 10-9, on a bucket by senior Tierra Shope with seven minutes to go in the second quarter.

DCC then went on an 8-0 run to pull in front 17-10 before Shope hit one of two from the free throw line that ended the flurry by the Lady Cardinals.

Shope had seven tallies in the second eight minutes for the Tide while Kylee Schaffer scored eight for the Cardinals who took a 21-17 lead into the intermission.

The squads played each other evenly, 6-6, in a low scoring third quarter, as DCC maintained its four point lead heading into the final eight minutes at Patton Hall, 27-23.

The Lady Tide could not cut into that four point lead as the Lady Cardinals iced the contest from the free throw line, going five of six down the stretch.

Curwensville did not make a field goal in the last period, hitting on just four free throws.

McCracken also commented , “We did a lot of things that hurt ourselves in this game including too many turnovers.  But I will say that Tierra (Shope) played hard for us.  She came out and did a good job in a very physical game.”

Shope led the Lady Tide with 13 points while Maria French scored 15 for the Lady Cardinals followed by teammate Kylee Schaffer with 12.

The Lady Cardinals won the junior varsity game, 47-17. Katie Evans had six points for Curwensville.

Curwensville will play at West Branch on Wednesday, with the JV game tipping off at 6 pm and the varsity to immediately follow.
