Tucson, AZ, United States (4E Sports) – Arizona posted a 12-2 run run through the second half as the No. 1 Wildcats pulled away for a 65-56 victory over Utah Sunday at McKale Center.
With their 20th straight win, the unbeaten Wildcats (20-0, 7-0 Pac-12) set a new school record for most consecutive wins over college teams
Arizona had reached 19 straight wins two previous times, as defending national champions in 1997-98 and during the 1992-93 season.
The Wildcats won 22 straight between the end of the 1913-14 season and the middle of the 1916-17 season but that streak included games against YMCA teams and Tucson High School.
Nick Johnson scored 22 points, Brandon Ashley had 11 points, Aaron Gordon had 10 points and 12 boards while Rondae Hollis-Jefferson provided the spark off the bench with 10 points and seven boards for the Wildcats.
Delon Wright scored 19 points, Jordan Loveridge added 13 while Dakarai Tucker tallied 10 points for the Utes, who dropped to 14-6 (3-5 Pac-12).
Arizona missed 10 of its first 11 shots, allowing Utah to take an early 12-2 lead. However, the Wildcats launched a 12-0 run to storm ahead, 14-12, behind Gabe York’s two foul shots.
It was a close fight from there before the Wildcats settled for a 31-26 halftime lead after a dunk by Kaleb Tarczewski at the buzzer.
In the second half, the Utes rattled off six straight points to pull within 33-32 and took a brief 37-36 lead on a layup from Loveridge with 16:12 left.
The Wildcats retaliated and took a 45-39 lead with 12:36 left after Brandon Ashley hit two free throws.
The game was tied at 47 when the Wildcats launched a 12-2 attack that gave them a 59-49 lead with 3:55 left in the game.
